Metalen kachels waren oorspronkelijk vooral bedoeld om kolen in te stoken. Tegenwoordig stoken de meeste mensen hun kolenkachel met hout. Daar zijn een aantal consequenties aan verbonden. Iedereen kent het fenomeen van de withete kachel die de kamer in een mum van tijd bloedheet maakt. In de hoop de kamertemperatuur weer in bedwang te krijgen zet men dan meestal de kamerdeuren open. Weg warmte! Of men remt het vuur af door het smeulend te houden. Weg schone verbranding! Bovendien vergroot deze manier van stoken de kans op schoorsteenbrand en CO-vergiftiging.
